10th BITC Environmental Index

The Business in the Community's annual Environmental Index is being compiled at present. The 10th Anniversary survey was launched on 9th September and ranks the environmental performance of some of the world's largest companies.

540 companies will participate including leading organisations from the FTSE 350, Dow Jones Index and from BITC's own 750 members.

Over the next few months many of the above businesses will evaluate their environmental activities using the Environment Index Framework. The index surveys a broad range of factors from environmental policy and management systems to climate change emissions and waste. The survey is beneficial with regards to issues of eco-efficiency, looking at ways to use less resources and energy and thus reducing losses through waste.

Inclusion in the Index helps companies communicate environmental performance to both internal and external stakeholders and investors and demonstrate their commitment to transparency. The index also helps companies to identify material and emerging issues for the Operating and Financial Review (OFR). Valuable feedback provided by Business in the Community at the end of the Index process reinforces good work and provides a gap analysis to help companies achieve continuous improvement

When the report is published in May 2006 it will include 10 year trends and sector analysis.

If you would like more information on the benefits of conducting an OFR or would like assistance in preparing one, contact Steve Stones on 024 7632 3260.
