Government's Sustainability Record Must Improve Says SDC
A new report by the Sustainable Development Commission has highlighted a number of areas such as climate change and waste where the Government needs to improve Britain's quality of life.
The document entitled: "Shows Promise: But Must Try Harder," claims that more needs to be done to tackle issues like climate change and waste, as well as inequality, health and transport.
Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) Chairman, Jonathon Porritt, said: "We must see a more determined effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a move away from consumption as the sole route to wellbeing, and new policies that lead to healthier environments and lifestyles for all."
The report makes much of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% before 2050, but highlights that there is no clear pathway. This is further compounded by evidence that Government will fail to meet its own 2010 carbon target (a 20% drop in emissions on 1990 levels) due to the projected rise in both road emissions and increased air travel.
The SDC urged the Government to take more drastic action over the next 5 years in order to meet the target and avert serious climate change.
Waste is also singled out within the report. It was found that domestic waste is rising faster than most of our European neighbours. It also found that although recycling rates are increasing they are not keeping pace with the increase in waste and are also amongst the lowest in Europe. The SDC recommended that Government should put into place resources and incentives to achieve higher levels of waste minimisation, recycling and reuse.
Pro Enviro has developed a range of products and services that address some of the concerns of the report. Climate Change Advantage allows companies to track their energy footprints and more importantly, their carbon output, against the framework of the Climate Change Levy, which was introduced by Government in April 2001. The framework taxes energy intensive industries, but those who meet sectoral targets are eligible for rebates of up to 80%.
Pro Enviro also employs experts in the areas of waste reduction, waste minimisation and energy management. If these products and services are of interest to you please contact us for a no-obligation discussion.
