Government Support for Climate Change Group

Tony Blair has pledged support for The Climate Group, a multi-organisational group aiming to build links between governments, business and industry to identify "best practice" for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Following the relative lack of success from previous attempts to control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the climate group – a charity comprising of organisations from a range of sectors including, financial institutions, business leaders, civil organisations and governments - was launched in London at the end of April 2004.

At the launch, Tony Blair said: "Climate change is the most important environmental issue facing the world today. By bringing together progressive businesses, states and cities from across the world, The Climate Group will enable these organisations to show leadership, and to demonstrate the benefits of taking early actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions."

The timing of the launch of the Group coincides with the publication of a report by the Sustainable Energy Policy Network stating that Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions rose by 1.4% last year whilst the proportion of energy generated from renewable sources fell from 3% to 2.9%. These statistics reveal that significant progress is not being made towards increasing the sustainability of Britain’s energy use.

The Climate Group Chief Executive, Dr Steve Howard, said: “The Climate Group is looking beyond Kyoto… We know there are many leading companies and governments dedicated to meeting or exceeding those targets. By bringing the key players together for the first time, we believe that the world can turn the corner on climate change.” The Group hopes to “promote the acceleration of greenhouse gas emission reductions globally” by disseminating best practice, and especially by highlighting ways in which money can be saved whilst reducing energy consumption.

The Group is hoping to fill the void created by the problems that have arisen in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol and provide some focus to increase the momentum of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The activities of companies in all sectors of the economy contribute to total greenhouse gas emissions, and as highlighted at the launch, there are ways of saving energy that also save money.
