New Year Resolution - Watch Your Waste
Can you make 2005 a less wasteful year?
Around 75 million tonnes of waste is generated each year by industry and commerce in England and Wales. Industry recycles around 45 per cent of its waste and commerce around a quarter. However, it is estimated that for every tonne of waste arising at work or at home, five tonnes has already been produced in manufacture and a further 10 tonnes when the raw materials were extracted.
To address this, the legislative responsibilities put upon industry in the UK are constantly increasing, especially in the area of waste production. Organisations now face an array of obligations to radically improve their resource management and consider the whole material lifecycle.
Whether or not as part of an environmental management system, businesses need to audit site operations against current waste legislation. Management of waste also involves identifying individual waste streams and re-considering the options for disposal.
Simple changes to processes and procedures backed up by training and regular reviews can help ensure process efficiency.
Could you for example;
- limit packaging, for example by choosing large containers or concentrates?
- re-use packaging or at least make it recyclable?
- avoid disposable parts?
- purchase supplies which are recyclable and those with recycled content
