Defra's response to climate change
Defra has published a new report which outlines the various scientific programmes it is funding to tackle climate change.
Some key examples of the programmes include:
- Defra funds the annual UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory, which estimates the levels of six greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from all sectors of the economy.
- Defra supports the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the West coast of Ireland to monitor greenhouse gas concentrations in the air as part of a world network.
- Scientists at the Defra-funded Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research at the Met Office use information about the current climate to make predictions about future climate, both on a local and global scale.
- Plymouth Marine Laboratory’s international research programme investigates how animals might respond to different acidity levels in their habitats.
- The section of the report focusing on the science and technology for preventing and coping with climate change explores numerous programmes including:
- Defra's support for new ways of generating and transporting energy, eg biomass and combined heat and power technologies
- Defra programmes for more sustainable production and consumption of goods
- development of a Food Industry Sustainability Strategy
- the Defra funded UK Climate Impacts Programme, which helps organisations assess how they might be affected by climate change
- programmes which focus on agriculture and biodiversity
- the Climate Change Programme which is currently being reviewed, due to be published before the end of 2005.
Pro Enviro has developed its complimentary programmes to help organisations deal with the threat of climate change and would be pleased to discuss these with you at your convenience, contact Steve Stones on 024 7632 3260.
