Govt is sending 'mixed messages' over low carbon economy

Friends of the Earth is claiming that the UK government is sending "mixed messages" with regard to the low carbon economy.
The campaign group issued a press release last week in which it detailed £34 million of cuts that will be made to investments in low carbon technology.
Simon Bullock, senior campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said that the reduction in spending "sent entirely the wrong message to investors".
He added: "The blunt dictat from the Treasury to slash spending is high risk and a false saving... If these cuts go ahead, major improvements to other policies are essential to make up the shortfall."
News of the cuts came as an article by climate change ministers Chris Huhne of the UK, Jean-Louis Borloo of France and Dr Norbert Rottgen of Germany was published simultaneously in all three countries calling for an increase in European Union emission reduction targets.
Current emissions targets are for a 20 per cent reduction by the year 2020 but the ministers want this increased to 30 per cent.
