WRAP staff inspired to recycle electricals

February 16, 2010

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) reports that staff based at its Banbury offices were so inspired by the organisation’s national electricals campaign that they decided to instigate their own "gadget amnesty" scheme.

The scheme collected around 120 broken or unwanted electrical items that were just cluttering people’s homes. Now, nearly 100 of these items have been sent for recycling, making use of Cherwell District Council's new bright pink recycling bags for electricals. The Council's electrical recycling banks will soon be in place at recycling sites around the district to receive these bags. Items that were still in good working order were first offered to colleagues, prior to being disposed of.

WRAP’s Sustainable Products Programme Manager, Gerrard Fisher, who headed up the national electricals campaign in the run up to Christmas made the point that, although people are getting better at recycling broken or unwanted electrical goods, smaller items, such as irons, solar powered calculators and hair straighteners, still get forgotten.

Typically, less than 15% of items that have a plug, chargers or batteries find their way into recycling collections. Nevertheless, these gadgets can contain a variety of precious metals, plastics and steel that can all be reclaimed and re-used.
