Green makeover for low carbon award winners

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has announced that 12 more communities from across the UK are celebrating the award of grant money through the Government's Low Carbon Community Challenge.

The recipients will have up to £500,000 each to spend on the installation of a variety of green technologies, such as solar panels, hydro turbines and insulation. The money is intended to assist communities in cutting their carbon emissions, reducing their energy bills and even generating their own renewable energy.

In total, 22 communities will benefit from support from the Low Carbon Community Challenge grant fund. The first 10 winners were announced on 21 December last year, and the latest announcement covers the remaining 12. The second phase of winners are listed below.

  • Hook Norton, near Banbury, Oxfordshire
  • Ashton Hayes, near Chester, Cheshire
  • Easterside, in Middlesbrough
  • Halton, near Lancaster
  • Exmoor National Park, in Somerset and Devon
  • Whitehill-Bordon, in East Hampshire
  • Ladock and Grampound Road, in mid-Cornwall
  • Ballymena
  • Camphill Community, Glencraig
  • Cwmclydach, near Pontypridd, South Wales
  • Awel Aman Tawe Community Wind Farm in Upper Amman and Swansea Valley, South Wales
  • Glogue, Hermon and Llanfyrnach, near Preselli Hills, Pembrokeshire
