Scottish government announce heat plans

Biomass will play a major part in Scotland achieving their 2020 target of 11 percent of heat coming from renewable sources, according to a new publication.
Jim Mathers, the country's minister for enterprise, energy and tourism, launched the Renewable Heat Action Plan on Friday (November 6th), which outlines plans to use heating schemes in urban areas and biomass in rural locations in a bid to drive growth in the sector.
Renewable heat in Scotland currently stands at just 1.4 percent of the country's total, a figure that the government hopes will rise to three percent in the next two years through projects either currently in operation or development.
Mr Mathers said that despite accounting for 50 percent of Scotland's total energy demand, heat has taken a "back seat in the renewable technology mix" for too long.
"[This] Plan highlights the need to utilise all technological options available, at a range of scales, to meet our 2020 target," he said.
"In the short to medium term, industrial and commercial scale biomass will be key to developing the sector, while the domestic sector is more challenging and has the potential to contribute in the longer term."
