Safety in waste management

September 11, 2009

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is to urge the waste management sector not to lose sight of safety in the midst of competing industry issues at a forthcoming waste management safety conference.

RoSPA's Health and Safety in Waste Management event will be held on 13 October 2009 in Manchester and is open to everyone involved in the industry, from directors, health and safety managers and team leaders to trades union and safety representatives.

RoSPA says there is "a host of legitimate pressures demanding the industry’s attention – including resource issues linked to the recession" and the safety body is concerned that the well-being of workers could "slide to the bottom of firms’ priority lists".

The conference, entitled "Is safety lost within waste management?" aims to put pressing sector safety issues at the very top of the agenda.

The waste management industry reports around 4000 accidents each year, and has an estimated fatal incident rate of around 10 times the national average. The accident rate of 2500 accidents per 100,000 workers is around 4 times the national average.

The event will start with a keynote address from Geoff Cox, the Health and Safety Executive's Head of Manufacturing, and the conference at Manchester's Etrop Grange Hotel will feature speakers covering vital topics including managing occupational road risk, the corporate manslaughter legislation and slips, trips and falls.

There will also be sessions on manual handling and managing contractors as well as case studies about improving health and safety culture within organisations and an address from the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum Chairman Chris Jones.

Further information on the event can be accessed at www.rospa.com/events, via e-mail: events@rospa.com or tel: 0121 248 2120.
