Green light for Liverpool gateway improvement scheme

August 17, 2009

The Department for Transport (DfT) has given the go-ahead to a £18.7 million scheme intended to improve transport links to the city of Liverpool. The hope is that this will help regenerate the city.

Up to £17.1 million will be invested by the DfT in the Hall Lane Strategic Gateway. This will provide an east-west highway from the M62 into Liverpool, thereby connecting Merseyside to Cheshire and Greater Manchester. As a result of the new access, a notorious bottleneck will be removed. This is likely to help attract business, investment and visitors to the city.

As a result of the scheme, the traffic situation will be eased for those heading into the city. At present, traffic has to turn either right or left into residential roads and face the inevitable delays. New road alignments will move traffic away from these residential areas. For most of its length, the new access road will be dual carriageway.

At all junctions controlled by signals, pedestrian facilities will be provided. Cycling facilities will also be introduced. Furthermore, extensive landscaping, the planting of trees and improvements to lighting will take place as part of the scheme.
