The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is to launch its 2009 "100 Hours of Carbon Clean up Campaign" on 3 September 2009, to give organisations another chance to participate in carbon-saving activities. This is the fourth campaign, and around 600 organisations signed up last year including hospitals and local authorities.
The campaign is open to companies from all sectors that want to reduce the amount of carbon emitted from their buildings and to motivate employees to get involved in carbon reduction. Participants will be able to access an extensive list of carbon-saving activities and advice.
The campaign aims to show that "small changes can make a big difference" to energy bills and carbon levels when used as part of an overall company strategy. It suggests that all employees can get involved by simply turning off lights and monitors, changing light bulbs, printing out fewer e-mails and switching off the air conditioning.
The CIBSE provides statistics such as a dripping tap can waste 90 litres of water per week or 500,000 litres per year which could cost a business £400 per year. Installing shading devices or window films can reduce the office's overall carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2%. Recycling 1 tonne of paper is equivalent to providing heat and hot water for a home for a year and saves 15 trees, 2.5 barrels of oil, 2.26m3 of landfill spaces, 31,320 gallons of water and 27kg of air pollutants.
