£600,000 allocated for local projects as part of "Big Green Challenge Plus"

July 30, 2009

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has announced that, under a new partnership between itself and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), community projects intended to reduce carbon emissions and promote the development of clean local sources of energy could receive up to £20,000 in funding.

The DECC/NESTA collaboration will see direct funding and support, worth £600,000 in total, provided to 17 grassroots projects throughout England. DECC will provide the money and NESTA will administer the scheme.

Projects to benefit from funding under the "Big Green Challenge Plus" partnership include:

  • a low carbon co-operative in Manchester

  • a project to deliver local hydro power from water mills near Bath

  • a plan to install renewable energy technologies on local farms around Winchester

This new funding is in addition to that already allocated by NESTA to the ten "Big Green Challenge" finalists.

Ed Miliband, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commented that low solutions to climate change problems were essential in securing a low-carbon future. He added that he was very impressed by the quality of the projects shortlisted.
