The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the DfT have compiled the online database, which is said to be the largest of its kind in Europe. The database will enable users to search for new van models available on the UK market and compare their relative performance in terms of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
Vans contribute approximately 15% of the UK's road transport emissions. Furthermore, emissions from this source are increasing at a higher rate than for any other road vehicle. It has been calculated that if every potential van buyer purchased the most fuel-efficient model in its class, he or she could save up to 17% in terms of reduced fuel costs and CO2 emissions.
In launching the new database, Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis commented that, in addition to being good news for van buyers, the new online tool would also help van manufacturers by stimulating interest and demand in the models they produce.
