Anaerobic digestion demonstration projects given green light

June 12, 2009

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced the five anaerobic digestion projects that have been successful in their bid to obtain Government funding to help them generate energy from organic waste, such as food.

The money (totalling £10 million) is to be allocated under Defra's Anaerobic Digestion Demonstration Programme. The programme forms part of a range of measures intended to help the country get to grips with the problems caused by food and packaging waste.

In anaerobic digesters, organic matter (like food waste and animal manure) is broken down to produce biogas. This keeps the waste away from landfill and has the added benefit that biogas is a useful source of renewable energy. All this helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The successful applicants for Anaerobic Digestion Demonstration Programme funding were:

  • Biocycle South Shropshire

  • Blackmore Vale Dairies

  • GWE Biogas Ltd

  • Staples Vegetables

  • United Utilities and National Grid

They were selected because they will utilise cutting-edge technology and will be able to demonstrate the benefits of anaerobic digestion to a range of industries. They will be built between now and the end of March 2011.
