Views sought on Cardiff waste facility permit

May 12, 2009

Environment Agency Wales is consulting local communities on an application for an environmental permit to operate a proposed energy from waste facility in Trident Park, Ocean Way, Cardiff. The application has been submitted by Viridor Waste Management Limited.

The Agency has responsibility for ensuring that such facilities are designed, constructed and operated in accordance with European standards. A permit will not be issued if the Agency considers that the environment or local communities will be significantly adversely affected by the presence of an energy from waste facility.

It is not part of the Agency's remit to determine how many energy-from-waste facilities should be built or decide where they should be sited. This is a matter for local authorities as part of the planning process. In this instance, Cardiff City Council is still considering Viridor's planning application for a facility at Trident Park.

The Agency's consultation will run until 10 July 2009. Further information can be found on the Agency's website at: www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
