The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has published a new guide aimed at assisting businesses to prepare for the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) which is scheduled to commence from April 2010. The guide sets out who is covered by the scheme and what is required of its participants.
The objective behind the CRC is to increase energy efficiency and combat climate change by slashing carbon emissions. It is one of a package of measures to be introduced under the Climate Change Act, and is intended to help hotels, banks, schools and around 5000 other large organisations save more than 4 million tones of carbon dioxide per year. DECC estimates that, by increasing energy efficiency and achieving these reductions, businesses could save up to a total of £1 billion by 2020.
Revenue generated by the CRC will be fed back to participants on the basis of a league table - the idea being that those who are making the most advances in energy efficiency will receive the highest rewards. The Environment Agency will administer the scheme and participants will have to register with them.
In addition to the new guide, the Government is also launching a consultation on the regulations around which the initiative will be framed. Further information can be found on the DECC website at: www.decc.gov.uk.
