Time running out for green grant applications

January 19, 2009

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is reminding charities and organisations, such as schools and hospitals, that the deadline for applying for grants through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme is rapidly approaching. The grant covers the installation of environmentally-friendly energy equipment, like solar panels, wind turbines or biomass boilers.

The deadline for homeowners is further away - they have until June next year to apply. To date, 7820 homes in the UK have been given a share of £10.4 million in funding. Since the commencement of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme in 2006, grants have been awarded to nearly 12,000 projects.

Lord Hunt, the Sustainable Development and Energy Innovation Minister, emphasised the importance, in the fight against climate change, of people and communities being encouraged to generate their own energy.

So far, 367 schools have benefitted from assistance from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme. Lord Hunt made the point that, not only did the funding enable these schools to generate their own energy and reduce their fuels bills, it also afforded the opportunity to instruct pupils about climate change.
