Recycling advice to help during the economic downturn

December 11, 2008

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is to launch a new advice forum for local authorities to help them deal with lower prices and weaker demand for recyclable materials.

In spite of the current economic situation, WRAP intends to provide consumers and local authorities with a clear message that they should continue to recycle. Although markets for some products have weakened, WRAP's research indicates that there is still a steady demand for recyclable materials of high quality.

WRAP's economists have been working with local authorities and the recycling industry to combine understanding of price movements with market supply and demand. This enables WRAP to act as an information broker between local authorities with specific issues and, via its website, to disseminate this knowledge to the widest possible audience.

Although it is evident that commodity prices are under pressure, WRAP hopes that its online market knowledge portal and tailor-made advice forum will assist local authorities through the downturn.

The Environment Agency has recently issued new guidance for waste operators to help them to minimise the impacts of the downturn, should they need to store waste in the short to medium term while markets recover.
