British Waterways would like to see wind turbines and small-scale hydro-electric schemes constructed on land it owns over the coming five years. The money from such schemes (estimated at more than £1 million per year), would be used for the upkeep of the waterways.
The exact locations of the turbines have yet to be decided, but British Waterways' partner in the project - Partnerships for Renewables - has praised the canal system owner for attempting to use its resources in an innovative and environmentally-friendly manner. It said the navigation authority was a "torchbearer for others" in this respect.
The revenue will be used to maintain and repair some of the 2200 miles of canals, locks, bridges and rivers throughout the UK, for which British Waterways has responsibility.
