Enviromental addition to drivng test

September 15, 2008

From today, new motorists taking driving tests will be given advice on how to drive in an economical and environmentally-friendly manner. Examiners will be looking to see whether or not drivers put this advice into practice during the practical part of the test.

Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick announced that an extra £3 million would be dedicated to the promotion of smarter driving techniques. It has been estimated that, by adopting these eco-friendly driving methods, motorists could save the equivalent of a month's fuel every year. The promotion package will also include advice on how to save money in the purchase of new cars. It has been estimated that up to three months' worth of fuel each year can be saved through the purchase of more fuel-efficient models.

The advice includes:

  • changing up to a higher gear earlier to avoid revving through the gears, although drivers should be careful to avoid stressing their engines by changing gear too early

  • avoiding carrying unnecessary clutter in the boot

  • keeping tyres at the correct pressure, which is a great boost to fuel consumption.

It has been stated that candidates will not fail or pass their practical test on the basis of this eco-driving assessment. Nevertheless, examiners will give candidates feedback on how "green" (or otherwise) their driving is.
