The latest figures show that the Carbon Trust has helped UK businesses to save £1 billion in energy costs and to cut carbon emissions by 17 million tonnes since it became operational in 2001. Businesses working with the Carbon Trust cut their carbon footprint by approximately two million tonnes last year. This is an increase of about half a million tonnes compared to the previous year.
Part of this support has been directed at smaller businesses and, since 2005, the Carbon Trust has helped them to save almost one million tonnes of carbon and make more than £100 million of direct cost savings.
The Carbon Trust also plays an important role in helping the UK hit its renewable energy targets by financing low carbon enterprises and developing low carbon technology. It is anticipated that this work will ensure carbon savings of between 16.2 to 23.3 million tonnes of carbon over the next few decades.
The Carbon Trust is an independent company set up by the Government to lead the drive for a low carbon economy in the UK, but it is now expanding its work internationally as other countries are keen to use its expertise in carbon footprinting and low carbon technology innovation.
