Renewables case pushed

The UK will have "little or no need" for large-scale investment in conventional power plants if it meets renewable energy targets, a report has claimed.
Independent consultancy Poyry maintained that if planning delays, grid connections and supply chain shortages are dealt with then up to 52GW of renewable energy capacity should be in place by 2020.
The report, commissioned by conservation groups Greenpeace and WWF-UK, dismisses the idea of a "no wind day" hitting British wind farms, describing it as a very low probability. Head of Greenpeace's nuclear campaign Nathan Argent said: "If we meet the 2020 renewable energy target, we will close the energy gap and cut emissions 40 per cent."
