Naples challenged by European Commission

May 9, 2008

On the road to a solution for the old question of waste in Naples, the Italian has made progress, but not sufficient.

The European Commission decided today to bring up Italy to the European Justice Court to ask to what extend European laws on waste management have been respected. The situation in Naples and the appointment of a new special commissioner, have put Brussels's spotlights on Naples again, sending also an envoy.

Considering the "deep crisis in Naples and the Campania Region" the men of Stavros Dimas, European Environment Commissioner, have come to the conclusion that the government hasn't really dealt with the situation. This is supported by the fact that similar projects in the past haven't had any results. Among other things there is the fact that funds for waste incinerators have been allocated, but very slowly.
