Council apologises over new bins

April 10, 2008

Council leaders have apologised over confusion created by a new rubbish collection system in Warwickshire.

Warwick District Council introduced the new three-bin system this month to increase the area's recycling rates.

However, rubbish has piled up in some areas and people said they did not know what to put into which bin and when and where collections would take place.

The council's chief executive Chris Elliot has now admitted that the system could have been rolled out better.

Lessons learned

A helpline set up by the council to help people understand the new bins system has received nearly 20,000 calls in the past two months.

Mr Elliot said the council accepted some responsibility and that resources had "not been as robust as they could have been".

He also said staff had learnt a lot from the previous few weeks.

People must use a red box to recycle items such as paper and glass, put garden and food waste in a green bin and non-recyclable items in a grey bin.

The changes also mean the council will collect recycling one week, and non-recyclable waste the following week.
