Work pressure leads to rule breaking

December 10, 2007

People who use their cars for work are being pushed into breaking the law by excessive work loads, according to a new report.

The study by insurance firm Royal and Sun Alliance suggests that many workers are using their mobile phones while driving in order to save time, and speeding in order to reach meetings.

It found that 15% of employees feel pressured to commit offences, with 21% having broken the speed limit to reach a meeting on time and 10% saying they felt they had no option but to answer their phone if it rang.

Businesses are required to provide employees who use a car for work with a code of practice.

Royal and Sun Alliance is urging businesses to ensure that all advice includes tips on safe driving and active encouragement not to break the law.
