Eco-apartments on the market

Rooftop allotments and on-site wind turbines are just two of the eco-friendly features that developers are using to attract buyers to a new development in Brighton.
Joint developers Crest Nicholson (South East) Ltd and BioRegional Quintain Limited say One Brighton, which is currently under construction, will be one of the UK's most environmentally-advanced residential developments.
A limited selection of the apartments went on sale off-plan this month and the rest of the studio, one and two bedroom apartments are expected to go on sale early next year.
One Brighton, in the city centre, aims to give its residents the ability to live more sustainably and the apartments have been designed to comply with 10 principles of One Planet Living drawn up by BioRegional and WWF International.
This includes achieving zero carbon emissions, providing a zero-waste plan, using sustainable construction materials and implementing sustainable transport solutions.
Steve Jones, managing director of Crest Nicholson South East (Ltd), said the company wanted to set a standard for environmentally-friendly living.
He said: "Zero-carbon schemes are an essential part of the future of property development and we are very proud, along with BioRegional Quintain, to be setting the benchmark for future developments.
"Together, we believe we have created a development that not only features striking contemporary architecture, but one which is able to play a major part in combating climate change."
Electricity will be supplied from renewable sources, supplemented by eight roof-mounted wind turbines, while hot water and heating will be provided from a biomass boiler which uses renewable fuel.
Residents will be able to make use of features such as roof top allotments where they can grow their own food, and roof gardens where they can relax.
The developers hope residents at One Brighton will not need to use cars as the development is close to the train station and linked to local cycle routes leading into the city.
They also plan to set up an on-site Car Club allowing residents to hire a car on occasions when they need to travel further afield.
