Dublin ponders more sustainable transport network

November 25, 2007

A more comprehensive strategy is needed if Dublin's transport system is to become more efficient and sustainable, an industry group has said.

The Dublin Chamber of Commerce said that it welcomed the current Government capital investment framework called Transport 21, but added that more plans need to be put in place to ensure the capital's infrastructure was both environmentally-friendly and efficient for business.

The group added that the existing transport infrastructure deficit is increasing business costs and reducing living standards.

A statement from the organisation read: "There is a strong competitiveness argument that the production of a specific comprehensive strategy for transport development in the Dublin City region is necessary, which would take account of Transport 21 but also look ahead to 2050.

"In addition, the current lack of a detailed implementation plan for Transport 21 in the region needs to be addressed, providing specific milestones against which delivery can be assessed and a detailed traffic management plan for the city."

Recent media reports suggested that schemes like Transport 21 were unlikely to be completed on time.

The chairman of a small business organisation, J J Killian, said at the time: "Although the economy is continuing to grow, the infrastructure bottle-neck is starting to cause real problems for Irish businesses."
