Reducing carbon emissions not a priority for small firms

February 22, 2007

More than three-quarters of small firms do not view reducing carbon emissions as a priority, according to energy supplier npower, as they fail to see the business benefits of helping to prevent global warming.

The npower survey of small businesses also found that of the 80 per cent that said reducing carbon emissions was not a priority, 42 per cent claimed it never be would be.

"The lack of commitment among small businesses to help prevent climate change is disappointing," said Carbon Trust spokesman Hugh Jones. "Business is responsible for 45 per cent of the UK's annual carbon emissions, so it's vital that small firms take action to reduce their energy use and cut carbon emissions.

"Even small reductions in carbon emissions can help the environment and reduce businesses’ energy bills," he added.

According to npower statistics, a one tonne reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is equal to a £75 reduction in energy costs.

"Small businesses should realise there are business benefits to reducing carbon emissions," he continued. "Energy-saving policies can create positive PR for businesses. Whether in its highlighted in the annual report or on its website, potential employees and customers can see the difference the business is making

According to independent think-tank, the Tenon Forum, one way to encourage small firms to take climate change more seriously is for the Government to introduce stronger incentives.

"Our research found almost half of small firms think that the Government is not doing enough to support their efforts to go green," said Tenon chief executive Andy Raynor.

"While most small businesses support implementing policies that reduce their environmental impact, they also cannot do so alone," he added. "Small firms need the Government to motivate and reward best environmental practice with tax credits, so that ‘green’ behaviour also makes a genuine difference to the bottom line."
