DTI backs waste management campaign

February 7, 2007

The Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) and the construction industry are backing a new campaign for raising awareness of Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs).

According to the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the campaign’s supporters will be encouraging small businesses to use SWMPs and prepare early for their implementation as a legal requirement in spring 2008.

NetRegs, set up by the UK’s environmental regulators, has launched the campaign after a survey found that 66% of businesses surveyed were not aware of what an SWMP is.

Campaigners are warning that construction waste costs money for businesses, with an estimated 13% of materials delivered to site being put into skips without ever being used.

The NetRegs website, www.netregs.gov.uk, offers an online guide explaining SWMP regulation, including downloadable templates to help businesses create their own SWMP.

Industry Minister, Margaret Hodge, said: "This site will help businesses find out what they need to know about the new legislation before it comes into force next year."

She added: "SWMPs are a good way to help businesses be careful about how they use, store and dispose of materials. It will also benefit the environment by reducing the waste generated from construction sites."
