Firm fined £10,000 for man's fall

October 19, 2006

A demolition company has been fined £10,000 after an employee suffered severe injuries when he fell through a roof he was working on.

Steven Edkins, from Rugby, had to have metal plates fitted in his face after the accident in September last year.

The 19-year-old was helping dismantle a warehouse in Rugby when he stepped onto a fragile light fitting and fell more than 20ft on to a concrete floor.

Suffolk-based Portal Power was told to pay £4,000 compensation to Mr Edkins.

He suffered fractures to his cheekbone, jaw and wrist, leaving his right hand permanently disabled.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out an investigation.

Magistrates in Rugby also ordered the firm to pay costs of more than £600.
