Cement firm fined for polluting

October 4, 2006

A cement plant's owners have been fined £400,000 after homes were polluted.

Cemex, which owns the factory in Rugby, was prosecuted by the Environment Agency after people nearby complained dust was covering their homes and cars.

The case was referred to Warwick Crown Court after magistrates felt the maximum £20,000 fine they could impose for causing pollution was not enough.

The firm, which pleaded guilty, said the incident last October was a one-off and it had since changed procedures.
