NOx drops but NO2 things aren't the same

August 21, 2006

Boffins puzzled by rising levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) despite a drop in nitrous oxide pollution in urban areas have published a report into what might be causing the phenomenon and are inviting others to comment on their ideas.

The Air Quality Expert Group was asked to look into the unexpected trend by Defra back in January and concluded that the most likely cause is that vehicle-fitted technologies designed to scrub out other pollutants and particulates are doing their job in reducing target gases but leading to higher emissions of NO2 instead.
