Brits put a break on SUV sales

August 20, 2006

UK sales of 4x4s have fallen for the first time in years, as the torrent of criticism branding "chelsea tractors" costly, polluting and antisocial appears to be taking effect.

Although the dip is not a major one, it was seized upon by environmental campaigners and raised fears among car manufacturers that the British may be following in the footsteps of the US, where SUV sales fell by 28% last year.

Car manufacturers dismissed the drop in sales as "insignificant."

Meanwhile, a survey has just found that Londoners overwhelmingly back policies that discourage the use of 4x4s in the capital, with seven out of ten respondents expressing their support for such measures.
