January 26, 2006

A haulier firm has been fined £16,000 after breaking waste disposal laws.

A Pettifor & Son Limited, Berkswell Road, Meriden, near Coventry, had arranged for 10 lorry loads of paint-contaminated wood to be dumped on a farm and burned, a court heard.

The company pleaded guilty to four charges under Sections 33 and 34 of the Environmental Protection Act and Section 1 of the Control of Pollution Act, concerning the correct storage of waste, ensuring its correct disposal, and being licensed to carry waste.

At Hinckley Magistrates' Court the company was fined £16,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,059.

Dermot Scully, prosecuting on behalf of the Environment Agency, said on July 7 last year one of its officers saw a fire burning at a farm in Sapcote, near Hinckley, and a Pettifor lorry near the fire.
