Chamber ready to help Rover victims

April 20, 2005

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce is to host a special help session for companies affected by the demise of MG Rover.

A team of Business Link advisers, working through the chamber, was assembled within hours of the company's troubles surfacing and has dealt with about 60 companies in the automotive sector.

A team of legal and financial experts will now be at the special session tomorrow to give advice to companies and individuals affected by the crisis.

Alan Lord, of Coventry and Warwickshire Business Link, said the workshop had been set up to give both general and detailed advice.

"We will be giving details of the assistance package we can offer businesses, which includes financial support for wage replacement. We want to talk to any companies which are facing cash-flow problems which affect their ability to pay their workers.

"The legal experts will be able to take general questions from the floor and deal with people privately in one-to-one sessions.

"The topics will range from employment law to cash flow and retention of title issues.

"We may not be able to give all the answers on the spot but we certainly will be able to point companies in the right direction and help with advice concerning diversification."

Mr Lord said that many of the Business Link team had worked with companies supplying Rover five years ago when BMW sold the group.

He added: "We are not seeing many of the same firms, which makes us hopeful that the companies were able to use the help and advice to successful-ly diversify and that that will have insulated them to a degree this time around.

"But to be able to help companies, we need to know who they are and we would urge them to contact us so we can give any assistance possible."

The session will run from 6pm to 8pm at the Chamber's Oak Tree Court headquarters on Binley Business Park in Coventry.
