Firm fined after 'caustic' burns

March 11, 2005

A cleaning company has been ordered to pay nearly £10,000 after an employee was burned with caustic soda.

Robert Boyle was seriously burned on his legs and feet when a colleague splashed the detergent as they cleaned at a Leicestershire pub in June 2003.

Both men were employees of Rugby-based Filtasonix Limited at the time, Market Harborough magistrates were told.

Filtasonix pleaded guilty to 10 health and safety charges. It was fined £4,000 and told to pay £5,625 in costs.

The prosecution for Harborough District Council said the accident has affected Mr Boyle's ability to walk.

Filtasonix said the accident took place after it started sending employees on health and safety courses, but Mr Boyle had not attended one.

Mr Boyle was given an apron, goggles and some rubber gloves. But no safety boots were issued, which might have prevented serious injuries to his feet.
