The Home Office recently confirmed to campaign group the Centre for Corporate Accountability that the draft Corporate Manslaughter Bill would be delayed.
Until the resignation of David Blunkett, the Home Office had been intending to publish the draft Bill on 21 December 2004.
The Home Office now says that it intends to publish the Bill before the end of the current parliamentary session, which is likely to be in Spring 2005 when a general election is expected.
In the November 2004 Queen’s Speech, the Government pledged to amend the law on corporate manslaughter, and announced a new draft Corporate Manslaughter Bill. The draft Corporate Manslaughter Bill will allow for the prosecution of companies that fail to ensure the safety of workers or the public, setting out a new offence of corporate manslaughter for cases when death takes place because of management failure.
