The Prime Minister has told a committee of MPs that the only way to meet the UK's promises on tackling climate change may mean it has to opt for nuclear power.
His declaration will draw praise from several influential greens, but may face criticism from environmental groups.
Tony Blair made no commitment to build a new round of nuclear power stations, and acknowledged the obstacles ahead.
Stephen Timms, Energy Minister, has said that the plants are not currently economic.
"We may well need new nuclear power stations in the UK," Timms told a wind energy conference on Wednesday. "(But) I haven't met anyone who wants to invest in nuclear power in the UK," he said.
