Plans within the European Union (EU) to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution through "emissions trading" have advanced.
The EU executive announced on Wednesday that it had given the go-ahead to eight national trading proposals, which involve sharing emissions quotas amongst factories and other energy-intensive organisations.
The move is a step towards meeting the Kyoto protocol on global warming, covering an estimated 5,000 of the 12,000 plants within the 25-member bloc. The factories include coal- and oil-fired power plants and heavy industries like cement and glass manufacturers.
